An off-duty police officer was among the two persons who lost their lives in a two-vehicle collision in Barrow County over the weekend. The fatal accident occurred just after midnight on Saturday, July 17.
According to the details shared by the Georgia State Patrol, the deceased officer was identified as Jacob Peek, 25. Peek was traveling along the Carl-Midway Road in Barrow County at the time. His vehicle was identified as a silver Ford Mustang. The second vehicle involved in the collision in Barrow County was a black Toyota Corolla.
Just as the two vehicles drew close on the Carl-Midway Road, the Ford Mustang veered to a side. Officer Peek was driving the vehicle at the time and he apparently lost control. The Mustang collided head-on with the Toyota Corolla at a high rate of speed.
The Ford Mustang had three other occupants in it in addition to Peek. Peek suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Once the first responders and paramedics arrived, he was pronounced deceased on the scene of the crash. The three passengers in the Mustang were rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. None of the passengers were identified by the GSP.
The occupants of the Toyota Corolla included the driver and a passenger. GSP identified the driver as Zachary Smith, 28, of Auburn. Smith also died in the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger in Smith’s vehicle was taken to the Northside Hospital Gwinnett with serious injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash. The focus of the investigations at this point is to determine how and why Peek lost control of the vehicle in the first place.
