One person died and another sustained injury in a two-vehicle crash on I475 in Monroe County. The incident took place early on the morning of Friday, January 15. It was reported to the authorities at around 5:20 a.m.
According to the details shared by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash involved a collision between two vehicles. These were identified as an 18-wheeler and a car. Both vehicles were traveling southbound along the I475 at the time of the accident.Â
As the vehicles drew close to the mile marker 12 just north of the Collaparchee overpass, the 18-wheeler collided with the car. 911 calls from the time suggest that the car had apparently broken down and was either in the leftmost lane or somewhere on the southbound lanes. It was for this reason that the 18-wheeler had a collision with the vehicle.
As the 18-wheeler collided with the car, it ran off the roadway and overturned. It also hit and damaged another vehicle in the process. As the truck rolled over, its driver sustained critical injuries. By the time the first responders and paramedics reached the scene of the crash, attempts to help the driver failed. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the vehicle into which the 18-wheeler crashed remained relatively safe in the incident. MCSO deputies confirmed that the car driver had only minor injuries to report. Paramedics transported the driver to the Navicent Health Medical Center for treatment of the injuries. The driver was discharged briefly.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the two-vehicle crash on I475 along with other local authorities. The focus of the investigations at this point is to ascertain exactly how the crash happened and what caused a collision between the two vehicles. Authorities are also likely to name the deceased victim once the next-of-kin has been notified.Â
